Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta 3/5 and set off on this sightseeing tour of Matera aboard an open-top minibus, passing the top attractions of this beautiful city in the Basilicata region.
Throughout the ride, you'll have an English audio guide sharing the history of Matera and fascinating facts about the monuments we'll see.
First, we'll pass one of the main symbols of late medieval Matera: Tramontano Castle, perched on Lapillo Hill. We'll learn all about the strategic role of this 16th-century fortress and admire the details of its architecture from the outside.
We'll continue through the Municipal Gardens and along the Sasso Barisano to the Church of Sant'Agostino. There, we'll stop for photos at one of Matera's most stunning viewpoints, with spectacular views over the rooftops, narrow streets, and homes carved into the rock. In the distance, the Gravina ravine and the Murgia Materana plateau create a striking landscape where history, architecture, and nature come together.
Next, we'll head to the Casa Grotta, a traditionally furnished cave house that shows what life was like in the Sassi until the 1950s. From there, we'll ride along Via Madonna delle Virtù, taking in incredible views of the suspension bridge, the Gravina stream, and Murgia Materana Park.
Finally, we'll pass through Porta Pistola, visit Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, and head back to the starting point after 2 hours.
